Dark Cornish chickens are a distinctive breed known for their deep, broad bodies and muscular build, making them excellent meat birds. They have a rich, dark plumage that can range from dark black to various shades of brown, with hints of iridescent green under the right lighting. Originating from Cornwall, England, they were initially bred for cockfighting but have since become popular for their meat qualities and as show birds due to their striking appearance. Dark Cornish chickens are characterized by their short, thick legs, strong beaks, and a very compact, upright posture that gives them a unique, almost game-like appearance. Despite their robust frame, they are relatively slow growers compared to modern broiler breeds. They are hardy birds, capable of withstanding various climates, and have a calm temperament, making them suitable for backyard flocks. However, their broodiness and maternal instincts are strong, often leading to reduced egg production.
